After that, just click Go and your most hated website, or most loved on, will be destroyed right in front of your eyes.
I know this all sounds a little strange, but once you give it a try you will see what I mean. You can try it out at http://www.netdisaster.com/
Also, I had dinosaurs destroy computer customizing guide, check out the footage here
Since the sound card is what sends the sound to your speakers, if it is having problems or is broken, the sound will not be right and most likely will come out distorted or sometimes not at all!
Basically there are just a few things that are likely to go wrong with your sound card. One of the major things that go wrong with sound cards is having a bad driver, or the wrong driver, installed for it (a drive is the software that runs the hardware).
Most people buy a computer with their sound card already built in, but the thing is your sound card driver can still become corrupted or over ridden by another faulty one over time.
So to put a point on it, always try reinstalling or downloading and installing new drivers for your sound card, before going out and buying a new one or trying to get someone to repair it.
Now of course sound cards are still able to just break like any other part in the computer, but since there are no moving parts on it, that is less likely. But of course if it does break, and you are not a graduate of engineering, the only way you can really fix it is to upgrade to a new one or take it to a local computer repair shop.
You can check out our sound card upgrade page to learn everything you need to know about upgrading a sound card, including a picture tutorial showing you how to install it.
For those of you who have problems locating your sound card, it most likely is attached to your main circuit board, AKA motherboard, inside of the computer. This is called a “built in” sound card and cannot be upgraded unless you buy a new motherboard. You can still buy a new sound card though, and install it in the required slot if you have one open, then set your default sound card to your newly installed one as a way around it.
To change your default sound card in Windows, you would want to go to “System” under your control panel, and go to the devices section and then to your sound card section. In that section you are allowed to change which one is the default sound card by changing its properties.
Overall though you need to keep in mind that your sound card is very reliable and will only require a little maintenance from you time to time, but do always check for new and updated drivers from the manufacturers website at least once a year.
]]>In a world full of different video and audio file types and formats, encoding, compressing and burning can become a tedious task unless you know and understand the basics.
So the first thing you should know about burning your own DVD’s is that you need a proper DVD burner. This is a no brainer for most people, since their DVD burners usually come with DVD authoring and burning software, but I thought I should still touch on the subject.
A proper DVD burner, that can make movies that play in just about every DVD player in every home, is one that supports both single and multi layer discs. A multi layer DVD is a DVD with two burning layers, so it can hold twice the information. This is very important, since a one layer disc will most likely not hold enough for one of your movies.
Really that is the only thing you need to make sure you have with your DVD burner, all the other options are pretty standard and should be just fine for making your own DVD’s.
Now we move onto the most important aspect of burning DVD’s, the burning software. DVD burning software is the software that decodes and encodes your videos so that they are in the correct format for a DVD player to play them.
Some software is better than others, and some a little faster, but overall it really depends on the quality of your computer. If you have a slow processor and a small amount of Random Access Memory (RAM), then it will take longer to decode and/or encode your videos so they can be burned onto the DVD disc.
Anyways, back to the task at hand, burning your own DVD. You first need to open your DVD burning software on your computer. I recommend Nero’s DVD Burning Software, which can be found on their website at http://www.nero.com/
Once your software is open though, it should ask you what type of CD or DVD you want to burn. In this case you want a DVD Video. Now you will be taken to a section that should let you add the video you want on the disc, along with a selection menu somewhere, that allows you to choose what type of disc it is. Like whether it is a single layer, dual layer or even a VR disc, which is erasable and rewritable.
Once you have chosen the correct disc type and have the videos added, you would move onto making the menu. In case you don’t know, a DVD menu is usually standard with all DVD movies you purchase, and can allow you to get pretty creative and do some interactive stuff. I usually just skip making the menu because I don’t need it anyways, but if you want to make one go right ahead and have fun!
Once your menu is cerated, or not, you move onto burning your DVD. Now when you try to go forward, if it says there is a problem with your video format/codec or something along those lines, then that means your video is not the correct format that is allowed by your DVD burning software.
That is why I tell everyone to get Nero’s burning software though, because they have every format that you can dream of supported, along with automatic compression, video editing tools, advanced DVD menu creation and much more! It truly is the best and easiest DVD burning software anyone could use.
Moving on though, the next part of the burning process is usually just deciding the burn speed, and whether the video should be in NTSC or PAL format. NTSC is for North America, and PAL is European.
After hose options are chosen, you can start burning your DVD, and you only have wait for it to get done. Once it is completed, close the burning application down and try your new disk in the nearest DVD player. It should play correctly and start up just like a regular DVD! You have now successfully learned how to burn your own DVD.
Please remember I was being very general with my instructions because what exactly needs to be done varies from software to software. Just make sure you take a look at your DVD burning softwares instruction manual if you can, to see the specific steps that need to be followed.
]]>This means you can connect to your office computer from your home, when your on vacation, or where ever, and use it like it is right there in front of you. For many, this type of freedom is priceless, and incidentally for many, they never use it.
In fact the Windows operating system has came pre-bundled with remote PC connection software since Windows 98 I believe. This means basically everybody has had the capability to do it for free, so long as they had the internet, for years.
Now of course their are pay for solutions that exist, that some say are much better and easier to use than remote PC on Windows, which is one of the reasons why it might have never taken off.
Anyways, the main paid for remote PC connection contender is GoToMyPC. Made by Citrix Online, GoToMyPC is very easy to use, free to try for 30 days, and even comes with a bunch of extra features that you wouldn’t even have thought of.
There is also another free open source software for a remote computer connection, which is called ShowMyPC (I wonder what that sounds like?), and is actually highly recommended also.
So really it all depends on what kind of reliability and service you want, which itself depends really on how much you plan to use it!
How to Use Your Remote PC Software
If you choose to buy your remote connection software, they all come with live support and manuals that will tell you how to connect to another one of your computers. The free solutions, like Microsoft’s and open source ones, are a bit more complicated. They all usually have directions telling you how to do it, but since they are free they are not going to put together a really nice tutorial that will tell you everything.
The best way to figure out how to use your software would be to search Google for answers, and thoroughly read any instructions that come with it.
]]>Well anyways, like I said before I have always built my own computers in the past, piece by piece. The reason I always did this is because the first computer I bought was a store bought, pre-built one, and it turned out to be a horrible nightmare. So I vowed to myself I would never buy from a big computer company again!
I broke my vow though, because I noticed one day that a Dell computer, with all the works and speed I wanted, was a lower price than one that I would build myself. This really interested me because why pay more when you have to do all the work of building and setting up your computer.
So I caved in and bought a Dell computer. First off, the computer arrived in a very short amount of time, even faster then all of the computer parts would have arrived if I bought them online.
The next amazing thing that happened is that all of the connection ports and the entire setup process literally took me under 10 minutes. It was actually to fast, and I kept thinking I forgot to do something. But I didn’t and it all just worked when I turned it one. I then filled out the Windows Vista information for my new computer, and it took me to my new desktop. That was it! I now had my new computer that was not only cheaper then one I would build myself, but faster, smoother running, and surprisingly still easy to upgrade parts.
In fact I easily took off the the computer case cover, and everything was neatly organized and clean. No wires pointing every which way, or unnecessary metal and plastic.
So believe it or not, that is my entire Dell experience. It was fast, easy and a great deal to boot. They also have a way for people who cannot afford to pay the entire cost right away. You can just pay a low monthly fee, that has a very reasonable interest rate.
Whatever computer you decide to get or build though, keep in mind that the type of computer Dell offers is the type of computer everyone wants.
]]>The main two contenders for external storage are flash disks, and external hard drives. A flash disk stores your information on a memory card that is made of liquid and metal, and has no moving parts. An external hard drive is basically your standard hard drive, but enclosed in a case and is connected via a USB port.
The advantage to flash disks is that they are very small, lightweight and can hold enough information to store a bunch of documents, pictures and more. The disadvantage to flash disks is that the data being stored can become corrupted over time without use, they cannot store huge amounts of information yet like a hard drive can, and they really are not that secure unless you go out of your way to make it secure.
Now the advantages to external hard drives is that fact that they can store large amounts of information, can be very secure, and are almost just as portable as a flash drive. Obviously the disadvantages are that external hard drives are not nearly as small as a flash drive, and they consume more power then a flash drive ever could. Also, since hard drives have moving parts, the chances of it breaking are greater.
Out of these two options though, there is one more that really does blow both of them out of the water, and that is storing your data online. Using an online storage company like XDrive, you can access your data (with a password of course) anywhere in the world where you have an internet connection.
In a world where the internet has been stretched to about every area, this solution makes sense and is much more convenient. The only disadvantage that I can think for online storage is the fact that if you do not have an internet connection available, then you cannot access your data.
The real problem people have with using free software is that everyone thinks it will be harder to use, but the opposite is true. For example, the best virus protection for free online, according to Download.com, is AVG anti virus.
AVG does not only have rock solid protection though, they also include an automatic updater and scanner so all the busy work is done when you are not using your computer, perhaps the most important time to have protection.
On top of those tools is the fact that there is no confusing gibberish or hundreds of pop-up windows alerting you of new viruses. AVG just has a simple box that pop-ups and alerts that you are infected, and asks whether you want to delete the virus or quarantine it.
Choose what you want done, and that is all, you can go back to surfing the internet or whatever else you were doing. You can download the free version of AVG at free.grisoft.com and try it out for your self. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed, as I have not been for the past two years I have used it.
]]>What could I possibly need the floppy disk drive for? Well that fact of the matter is, for almost a decade the floppy disk has aided computer builders, companies and hobbyist alike, in setting up the Operating System like Windows on a brand new, blank hard drive.
Now of course the floppy disk drive stopped being a requirement long ago for installing a Operating System on a new hard drive, but since I used it for so long, it was really the only way I knew how to do it.
So then what are the alternatives? Well the only 2 other ways I could think of doing it was one, creating a boot disk like I used on the floppy disk, on a plain CD disk. Since the CD/DVD drive is basically here to stay, it is a pretty safe assumption that every computer will have one, so it is a perfect replacement for the floppy disk drive.
The next option I had, which also worked out fine, was to use a flash memory card as my disk storage. In case you don’t know, a flash storage card is that same type of memory that is in your digital camera, and is very small. It usually hooks up through a device connected to a USB port, or built directly into your computer.
Well anyways, since it stores data I simply made it a boot able flash disk with all the same tools that were on my floppy disk, which allowed me to install the operating system. To make it boot from the flash drive, I just opened up the BIOS on startup (hold/press the Delete or F2 key on the first opening splash screen), and change the default boot device to USB or to the built in flash drive. This will make it read the boot able flash disk on the next startup, and boot from it.
These are of course vague descriptions on how to do this, but the fact of the matter is there are to many different types of Operating Systems and boot disk programs to really just give you step by step instructions, because most likely it will not be the same for you.
Also I figure if you are able to install an operating system on a new hard drive anyway, then you are able to get them to work for you anyways.
Whatever your situation is though, my methods will still work if you apply your certain conditions to them.
]]>This leaves a problem that most users think can only be solved by writing down every user name and password they ever create. That doesn’t need to be done though if you have a simple computer program called KeePass.
KeePass makes you only remember one master password, and within that account you can easily store all of you other account information, for an unlimited number of accounts. This means you only have to remember one password, and not even a login or anything else.
KeePass truly does make my life, along with many others, much more easier, and the best part about it is that you can download it for free.
In fact I have tried other password keeper programs that only cost a mere ten dollars, and it still wasn’t nearly as easy or secure as KeePass.
]]>If you ever have the same problem, you should be aware of what exactly a hard drive sector error is and what the warning signs are. So to start this lesson we will first talk about the fundamentals of a hard drive.
A hard drive is what stores all of your computers information, from the Operating System to a picture you might have taken on vacation. What happens is a circular magnetic piece of film is attached to a metal platter, and it spins it with a reading arm over head. The reading arm has a sensor on the end of it, which can read that magnetic piece of film by just being over it.
This is how the information gets stored, binary code in the form of ones and zeros are applied to the magnetic film and the arm reads and writes to it. This is what leads to the sector error problem, and is why you really have no choice but to get a new hard drive when this happens.
When the sectors that the hard drive breaks down into, which these days is hundreds of thousands or more, get damaged they can no longer be read by the arm and have no choice but to not be used anymore. This means at first your problem will be small, but over time as more and more sectors become unusable, specific data on them will be corrupted and you would not be able to store any more on that sector.
This slowly dwindles down your memory amount while at the same time destroying data. So like I tell everybody, you should always back up your data at least once a month, because you never know when this will happen. If you do backup your data, and this happens, all you have to do is buy and install a new hard drive, and then put your data on the new one.
