First Name: Dan

Operating System (if applicable): Windows XP

Question: Hi, I have just helped my friend by replacing the power supply. However when I hook up the CD and restart the computer I get a messsage to insert disc (no master / slave etc.) - If I do not hook up the CD then the computer starts and runs okay - what am I doing wrong?

Our Answer: Hi Dan. This one is simple. You see, you have to set your CD drive to be either the slave or master. If it is the only CD drive hooked up to that IDE cable, then it is the master.

If it is the second drive hooked up to it, then it is the slave. To set whether it is a master or slave, just look on the back of the CD drive for this thing called a jumper, which basically slides on and off, but when it is on, it connects two little pins together. It will tell you on the back of the Cd drive in text, which two pins to connect if it is the master and which ones to connect if it is the slave.

This jumper is very small, so don't lose it if you have to slide it off and move it. Also, if you have two drives hooked up to that one IDE cable, then either way one has to be the master and one has to be the salve, just make sure though that the hard drive (if connected to that IDE cable) is the master.

If it IS the only drive on that IDE cable, then it just needs to be set as master.

I hope I have helped you, and just let me know if you still have problems or questions. Thanks.
