So you want to do a CD Rom upgrade, but you don't know what CD Rom to buy or how to install it. These are the problems for most people when they try to do a CD-Rom upgrade themselves. Luckily, I have installed and upgraded almost every kind of CD ROM drive you can think of. With my knowledge, I will help you step by step with your installation and I will even help you get the best CD ROM drive or burner for your money.

Standard CD ROM - Your standard CD-ROM reads only CD formats, not DVD. Today's CD drives though usually also read CD-R, CD-RW formats.

CD-R & RW Burner - Burn your own CD's that contain data, music, and videos that actually play in most newer DVD players, even on the regular CD-R format. CD-RW can be erased (cleared of all data) and used again.

In my opinion choosing the CD-ROM drive for your computer is the easiest task for upgrading or building your own computer. The reason is because these days CD-ROM drives and CD burners cost practically nothing. For example, a 52x CD recorder, which is very fast by the way, cost around $20! So you should just get a CD burner because they also play regular standard CD's. Then you basically get a burner and a standard CD drive for the price of one, and since it is all in one, you only have to do one CD Rom upgrade. Installing your optical drive is an easy process that requires a bit of attention to detail. Just check out my CD Rom upgrade installation page and you can learn step by step, with photos to guide you!

Good software to burn your CD's is very important. You want an easy to use interface, good quality software that wont conflict with your CD burner and it should support CD-R and RW formats.

Most CD burners out there come with their own software, but if yours does not then I suggest you get the latest Nero CD burning software from Ahead. They have been around since 1995, and I have always used their software for my CD burning needs.

Every CD I have ever burned worked out great and it was always easy to do, what I wanted to do.

Well, I hope you have succesfully learned how to do a CD ROM upgrade. If this was your first time and you plan to do it again in the future, you can always come back here just to refresh your memory.
