First Name: Nigel

Operating System (if applicable): Windows 2000

Question: I have recently lost all sound coming through my speakers,e.g. WinAmp and Media Player, although sound associated with the game Civilisation seems to still work.

No sound either from E-mail greetings cards, etc. I had tried to load some oldish arcade games and it seemed the sound had gone after that. Could that be the problem? Grateful for any help to restore the sound! Regards

Our Answer: Hi Nigel. I would have to say that those arcade games are causing the problem, and uninstalling them should fix it. But, the games could have also changed your sound settings, and uninstalling them will still leave the settings the same.

The best thing to do is to uninstall the arcade games, and if the sound still doesn't work after that, go to your sound settings and change it to the correct device. To do this, open your control panel and click the sounds and audio devices, then click the "Audio" tab when the box opens.

Under that tab, you should see your Default playback device, which should be the correct device you have that plays your sound. If it is not, or there is more then one selection to choose from, experiment a little bit choosing a different device until the sound works.

You also should check to see if the speakers are plugged into the correct jack port hole on the back of your computer.

I hope I have been of help to you, and if you have any more questions just send me an email.

Poster Reply: I am ashamed to say that I had plugged the jack into the wrong hole at the back of the CPU (hence there was no sound) and only discovered this after you had worked on it.

I am pleased to say that I have now managed to set up my computer correctly and the sound is working fine!!

Once again many thanks for the time you spent with my "problem".

Regards, Nigel
