First Name: Robert

Operating System (if applicable): Windows 98 Second Edition

Question: I just upgraded my hard drive from a WD120 to a new WD250 gig and have had some problems with the new drive having all sorts of errors after the copy is made.

The mother board is an "ELITE GROUP" K7SEM 1.2b. I've tried both "Acronis true Image 9.0" and "Copy Commander ver.9" to make the copy and both work just fine but the same problems come back. Some files don't load or are missing or corrupted and some of my desktop Icons will change to a dead link.

My Norton utilities won't work right and when I run scan disk it tells me there is not enough free memory to run the program but I have 512MB of memory installed and no programs running. I can't figure it out so I gave up and put my 120 gig back in until I can find how to resolve this. Are there some things in the BIOS that may need to be changed so as to let it recognize larger drives? Robert

Our Answer: Hi Robert. It seems that the program that you used to copy all the files over to the other hard drive, messed up, or you didn't completely format and partition the new drive that you wanted to copy everything to. If you did partition and format it, then most likely the Acronis and Norton software is messing up.

I actually recommend those programs on my site because I have used them in the past and they worked great. I do hear sometimes though people complain about them not working right.

I recommend you try this free hard drive cloning program called PCI clone max. All you need to do is put in a floppy disk, double click to open the program, and follow the steps so that it creates a startup disk on that floppy.

Then you restart the computer with the floppy in the drive, and it will allow you to copy everything from one drive to another just like Acronis, but this is a different program so you might have better luck.

Now keep in mind, to do this, you need to have both drives hooked up to the same IDE cable, and one needs to be set as master and the other as slave on the back with the jumpers. You should make the new drive the master, so this way when you are done you won't have to change it.

If that still doesn't work, you should check out this page http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtml which has all kinds of other free hard drive cloning programs. One has to work, right!

I hope I have been of help to you, and if you have any more questions just send me an email.
